Western Food
'Western food' is a common term for hawker centre stalls serving European or American style grilled and pan-fried meats such as beef steaks, pork and chicken chops or cutlets and sausages. It is often served with french fries, slices of cucumber/tomato, baked beans and a piece of bread (with butter; rarely toasted garlic bread). Most stalls will provide a simple soup (usually mushroom) as an extra order. Traditionally, such stalls were dominated by the Hainanese group, although, like most common dishes, the dominance of the original ethnic sub-group has become blurred in recent times. It is possible to find Halal 'western food' as well, though prices tend to be much higher than (about double) that of the Chinese stalls.

Show me on mapThis stall was discovered at an old hawker centre in the Redhill area, hidden away from the major roads (hope the map helps). It's one of the better western food stalls I've tasted recently, with friendly service to boot. The chicken chop portion was rather generous (for $4) and nicely grilled, and came with coleslaw and big crispy potato fries. This beats Uno Beef House's chicken chop. The stall also displays some large sausages (I suppose German frankfurters) in a display case with heating lamps... wowww.....maybe next time.

Uno Beef House

Located at #01-60 Block 51, Toa Payoh Lorong 6., Singapore 310051
Show me on mapThis stall has been mentioned in the papers before. But I had heard about it some years back when it was already popular and pulling in the crowds at its previous address across the road at block 55. This location is more spacious and Uno occupies its own shop unit space although it is colocated beside a coffeeshop (you can cross-order drinks/food from there). Also, the bigger HDB carpark at this current address is a bonus to drivers. I tried the black pepper chicken chop which was quite good and not too oily, although it was not griled as hot as I would have liked it. Most of the dishes(chicken chop/cultet, porkchop, fish and chips, and yes, even seafood spaghetti !) cost $5, the lamb chops cost $6, but the star dishes seem to be the beef steaks - black pepper sirloin, rib eye, tenderloin - which cost from $9 upwards.
If you're wondering about the name, well, 'uno' is Italian for the numeral one. Do they live up to their name ? Try and decide for yourself.

Western Barbeque
Categories: Chinese, Western Food, HawkerLocated at #01-119G Old Airport Road Emporium & Cooked Food Centre, Block 51 Old Airport Road.
NOTICE : This food centre has completed its upgrading under HUP and stalls have re-opened at its original location on 1st July 2007., Singapore 390051
Show me on mapThis stall serves up a tender and juicy pork chop that's quite unlike most other western food stalls' which are usually dry and tough due to the grilling. Effort is made to tenderize the meat and the chopped garlic gravy takes away the smell of pork that could otherwise come across too strongly for some diners.

Show me on mapTucked away in a corner of a laid-back Kopitiam coffeeshop is this unassuming western food stall that is probably Hougang Kovan Central's best-kept makan secret, mostly known only to local residents and students. Prices are reasonable and you don't have to wait too long for your food.

Located at Stall 7 S-11 Coffeeshop, Blk 711 Ang Mo Kio Central Ave 8., Singapore 560711
Show me on mapThis stall serves up a wide range of western food choices. Food quality is pretty consistent and above average but nothing really impressive. Prices are higher than most other hawker center or open-air food courts - $5.50 for chicken chops, chicken cutlets, pork chops and $6.50 for lamb chops. The sirloin beef steak costs $7. Given these prices, I don't think they're value-for-money. Editor's note: watch for our future review of Botak Jones, a western food joint set up by a real 'western' guy, which is located at an ulu corner of Ang Mo Kio.
