McDonald's serves burgers, sandwiches, soft drinks, coffee and other fast-food items in air-conditioned throughout many parts of Singapore - from the posh malls of Orchard Road to the HDB heartlands. Many operate 24hours round the clock, and offer free wi-fi (wireless internet) access. The smaller McCafe outlets focus on serving drinks and ice-cream.

McDonald's Corporation is the world's largest fast-food restaurant chain with more than 30,000 McDonald's restaurants spread across more than 100 countries serving an average of 50 million people daily.

It all started with a neighbourhood restaurant set up by Mr Ray Kroc in Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955. The previous year, Ray had acquired the franchising rights to a hamburger chain based in San Bernardino, California from brothers Dick and Mac McDonald. (Fancy what would have been if Ray had set up on his own without the franchise - KrocBurger anyone ?)

Fast forward 24 years later, McDonald's opened its first outlet in Singapore at Liat Towers in October 1979. On its opening day, the outlet set a record for the world's highest number of burgers served. Talk about pent-up demand !

Today, there are over 100 restaurants dotted all across the island employing some 6,000 staff. In following with the times, all of these branches are equipped with free Wi-Fi (wireless LAN) Internet access. In addition, many operate 24hours the whole year through.
