Any of the variety of rice-based porridge or congee. Cooked with ingredients like fish slices, lean pork, chicken meat shreds and/or century eggs. Also refers to the general stalls serving porridge with a variety of side dishes (see Teochew Muay).

Jin Ji's braised duck meat and kway chap is one of the better ones in this area. The duck rice here is also one of the favourites of the more hurried
The extremely thin and soft kway chap is very easy on the gullet. Slurp it up and it slides effortlessly down your throat. I ordered another bowl and it didn't leave me feeling bloated after my meal
The secret here is really in the chilli sauce, a sourish concoction of minced chilli and garlic among other ingredients

Show me on mapThis unassuming stall serves up very thin and soft kway chap (flat rice noodles) unlike many others' thick noodle texture and often starchy taste. The braised duck is very well done without being overly salty. There is a choice of plain white or yam rice, as well as porridge or noodles if you're just going for duck dishes.

Show me on mapThis traditional no-frills Chinese restaurant is located in a kooky part of the seventh floor of an old HDB block near to Manhattan House and seems to have been around like forever. Ok not forever, but easily a few decades. It's popular for dim sum, and a favourite dish of mine here is the crispy roast pork cubes (also see entry for Crystal Jade Toa Payoh under dim sum category). Overall quality and service is nothing to shout about it continues to hold its own against fancy new players in the uppity newer malls. So try this out at least once before the unstoppable tide of upgrading (en-bloc!) closes it down some day.

Show me on mapThis is my first entry for the popular Crystal Jade chain of dim sum and Chinese/Cantonese restaurants. I wouldn't normally want to add these type of outlets/restaurants here, but I've recently been coming here a few times and enjoying the food, so I thought I'd break with good ol'tradition and put this one in. To get an idea of what order, here's a hint: I never fail to order the crispy roast pork cubes (脆脾烧肉) which goes very well with the mustard sauce (drool now, you wasabi lovers). You can also get this same dish at the Red Star Restaurant which is at HDB block 54(or 53?) Upper Cross Street in Chin Swee Estate near Manhattan House. Another dish I tried (see photo) was the Deep Fried Prawn with Salted Egg Yolk and the roasted duck meat. All pretty decently prepared and cooked I must say. It's a shame since this part of Upper Serangoon Road is in Hougang - a Teochew enclave that should really be seeing much better Teochew food shops - and the crowds seem to have voted with their mouths for the Taiwanese. Costs $5-10 per person depending on the dishes ordered, with the unlimited porridge/rice servings for $0.50 per person. Opens 11am till late (or should it be early morning ?) at 2am.
