The East zone comprises many interesting areas. Famous are the Katong and Joo Chiat districts. Major roads in this zone are New Upper Changi Road, which runs through the Kembangan residential estate and Bedok HDB housing estate, and Geylang Road (one-way westwards towards the city) which runs parallel to Sims Avenue (one-way eastwards away from the city).

This steamboat stall at this old hawker centre serves range of usual steamboat fare - prawns, fish head meat, tofu, pig liver, beef, chicken, enoki mushrooms(the Chinese call them golden needle mushrooms, 金针菇) and vegetables - and comes with a small pot of satay sauce dip. However, be warned that everything here has very light, if any, seasoning. The soup (and the satay) is quite bland. Then again, the fact that the stall dares keep the seasoning light, does indicate its confidence in the freshness of the food, and you can be sure that they've skipped the MSG and tongue-numbing salt/chilli sauces.

You can't miss it when passing by Joo Chiat Place as the queue outside the shop will start forming around 6pm till 7/8pm. The kopitiam is not very small, so the main reason the queue forms, I believe, is due to their limited stock of crabs. Despite all the hype - being recommended by Makansutra and written about by Anthony Bourdain (chaperoned, oops I mean tour-guided by Makansutra's Seetoh, no less) - I didn't find anything outstanding about the fried kway teow on a weekday lunch trip here. No, it wasn't bad at all, it was quite well done - everything fell into place, the ingredients, the hums and stuff. But in the end, I just wasn't impressed. It's worth noting there's another stall named 'Hill Street Fried Kway Teow' in the Chinatown Complex Food Centre which, it seems, is run by the same family. No prizes for guessing how that one fared in my little black book as well. Opens lunch till dinner.

Another competitor to International Food Stall (IFS). It is diagonally opposite IFS and next to Sri Sujana, also a nasi lemak stall. The quality of the nasi lemak here is quite good as well, and lunch time sees office staff from the nearby airport/cargo complexes and aviation parks ordering take-aways of tens of packets. $2.50 gets you a rather large bowl-like plate of coconut-flavoured rice and a meaty chicken wing with a generous dollop of fragrant chilli sauce !

This stall used to be good and popular, lunch times saw long queues forming here. But it nows seems to have been handed over to employees or third party operators who continue to use the same name. Feedback has been that the standard has dropped much.
Update: I finally got round to eating this recently. Well, I've tried the previous version years back, of which I wasn't a big fan to start with, and found the latest quality to be quite good actually. I think the beef may not be as fresh (think pinkish-red) but the overall taste was in fact better than Ang Mo Kio Block 233's Hong Heng which I last tried not too long ago. I especially like the cincalok (fermented shrimps in brine) with shallots and lime/vinegar which you hardly find served by other such stalls. Lastly, the soup had a slight bitter tinge which I suppose comes from some of the herbs used.

Show me on mapThis old shabby-looking single-storey coffeeshop is one of the favourite crab eateries in the area. They are popular for their pepper crabs. You can't miss it when passing by Joo Chiat Place as the queue outside the shop will start forming around 6pm till 7/8pm. The kopitiam is not very small, so the main reason the queue forms, I believe, is due to their limited stock of crabs. The stall opens from 5pm till 9-10pm, but don't be surprised if you find the crabs sold out by 8pm on busy days!

Show me on mapChai Chee Noodle Village has set up various branches around the island. This stall in Parkway Parade seems to have kept up its standard. You would have expected good bak chor mee noodles to come mostly from the seasoned hands of a middle-aged or even ah pek, but this stall was manned by a young chap barely out of his 20s who was cool and steady despite the longish queue even at 230pm on a weekday. Quite impressive !

Show me on mapDespite all the hype - being recommended by Makansutra and written about by Anthony Bourdain (chaperoned, oops I mean tour-guided by Makansutra's Seetoh, no less) - I didn't find anything outstanding about the fried kway teow on a weekday lunch trip here.

The cincalok sauce (bottom) with shallots and vinegar was my favourite
Categories: Chinese, Beef Kway Teow, Hawker
Located at Block 203 Hougang Street 21, Singapore 530203
Show me on mapThis stall used to be good and popular, lunch times saw long queues forming here.

*Happy Steamboat*
I've found a new steamboat place at Sempang Bedok (At Shop & Save Supermarket). They serve 2 base soup, (chicken & tom yum) both unique and tasty.
Their handmake meatballs, thin-sliced beef and pork are tasty (Steamboat & BBQ) and able to make me crave for more.
Their seafoods are fresh especially their prawns are extremely fresh and crunchy!
Delicious in-house chilli sauce go well with all their dishes!
They even import Japanese Wok for BBQ! Thumbs UP!
Really recommendable!
Gd food at economical price!
I wish I have photos to post it all!
