Despite its recommendation by Makansutra some years back, the braised duck meat of this stall is disappointingly second rate. The saving grace was the chilli sauce and lor(soya sauce seasoning) which still could not hide the fact that the bony duck meat didn't taste very fresh. With this standard for the common duck, I won't be venturing into goose territory.

This shop was voted by the public as one of the most popular carrot cake stalls in Singapore in Yummy King. The carrot cake is of the black (soy sauce) variety. You wouldn't know at first glance because the stall front display overflows with a range of traditional teochew kuehs (glutinous rice kueh, ou kueh, ku chye kueh and soon kueh) and other snacks. Looks like we've finally found the missing link between kueh and kway (as in chye tow kway a.k.a. carrot cake) ;-)

This is one among the many stalls that serve masala tea (chai masala) in Tekka Food Centre. I've tried a few stalls but this one is my preferred. The tea comes with a generous scoop of masala powder and isn't too sweet unlike that from stall #01-327. In total, I counted 4 drinks shops - #320, 322, 325 and #327 - all selling teh masala and ginger tea (teh halia) within the same row of stalls. This must undoubtedly be Singapore's Masala Tea Row ! The other shops in the row are all halal food stalls selling mutton soup, chicken/mutton bryani, mutton chops, tulang (mutton bone with marrow), roti prata, Indian rojak and other local Malay/Indian dishes. Just this row of hawker stalls alone makes it worth your while to visit Tekka Market & Food Centre.

This is the famous stall that made the headlines in Singapore and Hongkong in July 2006, when it refused to open beyond its usual operating hours to serve Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. It made the news again in January 2007, when ex-Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, 4 months after his ousting in a military coup, made his way here for lunch in a visit to Singapore. He reportedly ate with an entourage of 17 and after that gave the thumbs up to Mr Ng, the shop owner. What more can I say ? This stall has been mentioned in the papers before. But I had heard about it some years back when it was already popular and pulling in the crowds at its previous address across the road at block 55. This location is more spacious and Uno occupies its own shop unit space although it is colocated beside a coffeeshop (you can cross-order drinks/food from there). Also, the bigger HDB carpark at this current address is a bonus to drivers. I tried the black pepper chicken chop which was quite good and not too oily, although it was not griled as hot as I would have liked it. Most of the dishes(chicken chop/cultet, porkchop, fish and chips, and yes, even seafood spaghetti !) cost $5, the lamb chops cost $6, but the star dishes seem to be the beef steaks - black pepper sirloin, rib eye, tenderloin - which cost from $9 upwards.
If you're wondering about the name, well, 'uno' is Italian for the numeral one. Do they live up to their name ? Try and decide for yourself.

This stall used to be at the corner of old block 135 (before the double-storey food centre, block 127 was built). Back then, seating was alfresco and tables overflowed onto the open area outside the hawker centre. Business was good and so was the hokkien mee. When I had my hokkien mee here in this replacement centre (under HUP), something seemed to be lacking although the same guy was doing the cooking. Was it the food or the atmosphere ? I wasn't totally sure. Perhaps it was purely psychological - the old hawker centre had a look similar to the Commonwealth Avenue (Margaret Drive) hawker centre. The laid-back feeling of having your noodles under the stars has somehow been lost to this spanking new food centre.

The bak kut teh here is the clear and peppery type, although the spiciness of the peppercorns used is very mild and weak. The pork rib meat was done just right, tender (seemingly from long slow-cooking) and not overly stiff like what you usually get at the Balestier Road stalls. Overall, this stall is one of the better choices for BKT and braised pork trotters in and around the Toa Payoh region. $30+ will get you and 3 companions a full meal - a generously-sized braised pork trotter; 4 bowls of pork rib soup; a plate of mixed pig tripe/intestines/innards, tofu and braised eggs; one plate of steamed peanuts; a plate of garlicky (lightly) salted vegetables; and rice per pax. Incredible value for money !

This is my first entry for the popular Crystal Jade chain of dim sum and Chinese/Cantonese restaurants. I wouldn't normally want to add these type of outlets/restaurants here, but I've recently been coming here a few times and enjoying the food, so I thought I'd break with good ol'tradition and put this one in. To get an idea of what order, here's a hint: I never fail to order the crispy roast pork cubes (脆脾烧肉) which goes very well with the mustard sauce (drool now, you wasabi lovers). You can also get this same dish at the Red Star Restaurant which is at HDB block 54(or 53?) Upper Cross Street in Chin Swee Estate near Manhattan House. Another dish I tried (see photo) was the Deep Fried Prawn with Salted Egg Yolk and the roasted duck meat. All pretty decently prepared and cooked I must say. Advance reservation is advisable for Crytal Jade Toa Payoh - Tel: 6397-2383.

I tried Ah Hock's some years back and it left a good impression at the time. If my memory serves me right, the father was still involved in running the stall then. This time round, the result was disappointing - the oyster omelette was fried too dry, the oysters seemed 2nd rate and the eggs just didn't give the fresh mushy aroma that I remembered from long ago. All this would have been excusable if it was a $2/$3 plate from any hawker stall, but $4 (the lowest-priced plate) for a tweeny portion served in a sweaty cranky makeshift hawker centre just didn't cut it for me. I'll stick to Chomp Chomp and even Beng Hiang at Amoy Street where the value per-dollar beats this hands-down.
Don't take my word for it though, go check it out yourself :- Opening hours 12pm - 12am midnight, closed on Wednesdays.

This stall has branched out into many outlets throughout Singapore including West Mall, Eastpoint and Marina Square among others. It also has a corner coffeeshop-style eatery along Balestier Road. I ordered a roast chicken rice packet here on a Sunday (Mar 2007), and the rice and chicken meat were both not up to par. It was totally unexpected considering that this stall was once a Yummy King awardee (you see the placard on their stallfront) and endorsed as "Chicken Lickin Good" by Margaret Chan in the Sunday Times (marketing blurb on their white styrofoam packets). Truly, another stall/chain that has fallen victim to the curse of the foodie award and chain expansion. I can't say for the other outlets, but for this one: not worth your trip at all.

This 24-hours bak kut teh shop is found next to a bus stop along Balestier Road. I found prices here quite unjustified when benchmarked against Founder's (unit 347 a minute's walk away). The usual BKT bowl costs $4.50 and the not-so-generous spare ribs soup cost $6.50. The chye buay (preserved vegetables) costs $2 - double that of Founder's (as at this time - early 2007). To be fair, most of the side dishes were rather well-cooked and tasty. Would I come again ? not likely given the many other BKT choices in this area. Also, I'd rather try the late-night porridge supper buffet at Quality Hotel not far from here.

Located at #02-27 Toa Payoh 127 Market & Food Centre, Block 127, Toa Payoh Lorong 1, Singapore 310127
Show me on mapThis stall used to be at the corner of old block 135 (before the double-storey food centre, block 127 was built).

Hock Kee (Lor 8) Bak Kut Teh 福记(八巷)肉骨茶

A bowl of pork ribs soup from Hock Kee at Block 210 Food Centre, Toa Payoh Lorong 8

Mixed plate of pig's tripe, intestines and innards, braised eggs, taupok and doufu

A very meaty piece of braised pig trotter.
Categories: Chinese, Bak Kut Teh, Soups
Located at #01-115 Market & Food Centre, Block 210 Toa Payoh Lorong 8., Singapore 310210
Show me on mapThe bak kut teh here is the clear and peppery type, although the spiciness of the peppercorns used is very mild and weak.

Mellben Seafood

Mellben Seafood has opened a branch at Toa Payoh Block 211.

Hmmm.... yummy pork ribs king. I forgot if this is the coffee version. It sure looks heavily honeyed and sweet

This is the Golden Sand Crab dish. The 'sand' is really oat flakes, and the crab is doused with a creamy peppercorn-laden cheesy sauce - phew ! as much a mouthful to describe as it was to eat

Crab in Bee Hoon Soup, their signature dish. Still a notch better the others I've tried

Leave no shell unturned

As I mentioned in the remarks about the main shop, the name Mellben often continues to be misspelt 'Melben' throughout the web. This branch's tel: 6353-3120.

Crystal Jade Kitchen (Toa Payoh)

Crystal Jade's Toa Payoh branch

Xiao long bao (little dragon dumpling)

Ma Ti Gao (water chestnut cake) - a must-order item for tim sum time !

Now repeat after me in french, le pièce de résistance - the 3x3 crispy roast pork cubes, served with mustard cream. Tic tac toe anyone ?

Prawns with salted egg yolk - nothing I'd ga-ga over.

Show me on mapThis is my first entry for the popular Crystal Jade chain of dim sum and Chinese/Cantonese restaurants.

Ah Hock Fried Oyster 亚福蚝煎

The temporary Whampoa Market and Food Centre Block is not the most comfortable of places

This plate of Ah Hock Fried Oyster's omelette costs $4 ! not exactly the best of value.
Categories: Chinese, Fried Oyster Omelette, Hawker
Located at #01-111 Whampoa Food Centre (temp site replacing former Blocks 90 & 91), near Block 90, Whampoa Drive, Singapore 320090
Show me on mapI tried Ah Hock's some years back and it left a good impression at the time.

Show me on mapThis stall has branched out into many outlets throughout Singapore including West Mall, Eastpoint and Marina Square among others.

333 肉骨茶 Bak Kut Teh

333 Bak Kut Teh is open 24-hrs and located in front of a bus-stop

The spare ribs soup bowl costs $6.50 - very sparing indeed !

Show me on mapThis 24-hours bak kut teh shop is found next to a bus stop along Balestier Road.
